NFL Week 7 Picks

So I didn't do a power poll this week for a couple reasons: 1) I was busy with real work and 2) week 6 saw 6 of the top 8 teams in my power poll lose (and the other two had bye weeks), so I figured I would take a week off, watch a lot of football this weekend and try to figure out what the hell is going on in the NFL. My picks were pretty rough last week too, but I will keep on trucking with that as I'm still well over .500 on the season.

Titans (-10) over CHIEFS - I was already picking the Titans in this game, because well, I couldn't figure out how the Chiefs were going to score more than 10 points against this team without LJ and starting whoever at QB this week, but I heard this interesting stat today: undefeated teams are 15-1 against the spread coming out of their bye week in the last 4 years.

BILLS (+1.5) over Chargers - I hate picking a Chargers game because I never know what to expect from them, but I keep hearing how hard it is for a west coast team to come across the country and play an early game (10 AM PST). This and the fact that Buffalo is coming out of a bye week has me leaning to the Toronto, err, Buffalo Bills in this matchup.

Steelers (-9.5) over BENGALS - Always take the team with a QB who has taken a face plant off his motorcycle into a windshield and still gone on to win a Super Bowl over a quarterback from Harvard. And they're coming off a bye week too, as if you needed any more convincing.

DOLPHINS (-2.5) over Ravens - It'll be interesting to see how the Wildcat offense survives this week against the hard hitting Ravens D. I think they have enough success to win this one easily as the Ravens offense isn't going to put up many points in this matchup.

Cowboys (-7.5) over RAMS - Don't be mislead by that Rams win last week. Their offense still had only 8 firstdowns and really shouldn't have broken double digits in that game. Regardless of the who the Cowboys line up at QB, they'll get at least 20 against this Rams team. Take the Boys and consider teasing it up a couple points to cash in on this line being way too low.

BEARS (-3.5) over Vikings - I don't really know what to think about either of these teams, so I figure just take the home team here. I think this will be a close game and would like this line a lot more at 2.5, but I still think the Bears come out on top here.

PANTHERS (-3) over Saints - Until the Saints prove to me they can win a tough road game I have to go against them, especially against a tough Panther team that is coming off an embarressing loss last week. Look for them to rebound here against the Saints.

GIANTS (-11) over 49ers - My head is saying that Monday night performance from Eli was just an off game for him. My heart is telling me that that's the same old Eli who throws way too many balls up for grabs. I'm trying to bet using my head and it helps that the Niners suck. I've made a lot betting against the Niners this year and I'm going to go with what's worked here.

TEXANS (-10) over Lions - Never bet on a guy who does this in an NFL game:

Jets (-4.5) over RAIDERS - Quote from Bill Simmons this week: "When DeAngelo Hall covers Javon Walker in practice, it must be like watching CGI'ed footage of the Titanic crashing into the Hindenburg."

REDSKINS (-7.5) over Browns - The Skins SHOULD win this game easily easily, but I'm still nervous after last weeks performance. All in all I think it was a fluky game and I think the Redskins come back refocused this weekend and put the Browns away early.

Colts (-3) over PACKERS - Did we see the rebirth of the Colts last week? I'm sure not willing to bet against it.

BUCCANEERS (-10.5) over Seahawks - The Bucs are an excellent team at home and the Seahawks are starting Seneca Wallace at QB. The only reason this line isn't 15 is because of the uncertainty at QB for the Bucs. The Bucs will win in a rout regardless of who plays QB in this one.

PATRIOTS (-3) over Broncos - I don't think either of these teams is that good, but I still don't have faith that the Broncos can go on the road and beat an average opponent. This will be a close game and I could easily see it be a push, but I'd rather bet on who I think has the best chance of winning the game outright when the line is this low.

The Fall Movie Preview: Movie #3

#3 – The Road

The breakout star of this past summer was undoubtedly Robert Downey Jr. With Iron Man and Tropic Thunder he catapulted himself from the poster boy for wasted talent to the A-List. He showed off the versatility we always knew he had and the ability to be a Hollywood leading man (that we didn't necessarily expect).

This winter's breakout star could very well be Viggo Mortensen. Nobody doubts his ability as one the finer talents of his generation. What was in question was the path he would take with his career. Would he take the course of Christian Bale and Johnny Depp and sacrifice a degree of his acting credibility to take on the big-budget Hollywood parts? Or would he choose the path of the notoriously reclusive Daniel Day-Lewis and only take on a role once every few years? With three movies coming out this winter (Appaloosa, Good, and The Road) it looks like he has chosen the former.

The most intriguing of these three releases is undoubtedly The Road. It's based on a 2006 novel of the same name which was released to almost universal praise and inducted into the hallowed halls of Oprah's Book Club. It tells a story of a father and son trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic America. I don't know much else about the story (nor do I want to) but the source material and cast (Viggo foremost among them) make this movie a must-see and a likely Oscar contender.

At the age of 49, it's a shame Viggo hasn't really hit his stride until recently. That being said, I think it's likely he gets enjoy a few years of "leading man" status and then settles very comfortably into a Jack Nicholson-esque existence. Not to say he is anything like Jack in personality, but I can see Viggo popping into key supporting roles here and there well into his 70s. Let's hope he gets that Oscar before it's all said and done

On a related note. What kind of name is Viggo? Wasn't that the name of the bad guy from Ghostbusters 2? Have you heard the rumblings about Ghostbusters 3? I don't know how I feel about it.

NFL Week 6 Picks

It was a busy week of work and college football yesterday, so I'm just getting to the picks now, so here we go (home team in caps):

SAINTS (-7) over Raiders - Saints in a must win at home and Raiders new coach was 11-35 in only coaching stint (at the Universtiy of Idaho).

Ravens (+3.5) over COLTS - This Colts team is not good and the Ravens have suffered a couple tough losses while playing well the last two weeks. Look for a bounce back game for the Ravens.\

JETS (-9.5) over Bengals - Lesson in life: You don't want Harvard grads responsible for your economy (Ben Bernanke) or your team's offense (Ryan Fitzpatrick).

Panthers (+1.5) over BUCCANEERS - This is a tough one as the Bucs are a good team at home, but with their turmoil at the QB situation, going up against a real strong run defense just isn't a good matchup for them.

VIKINGS (-13) over Lions - Detroit has been down by 20+ points in every game and this week starts some QB named Orlovsky. Vikings have a great defense and are still in a must win so expect a blowout.

Bears (-3) over FALCONS - I am coming around on both of these teams, especially the QBs, so this one came down to the fact that I think Kyle Orton is farther along than Matt Ryan at this point.

TEXANS (-3) over Dolphins - I know I may not be giving the Dolphins the respect they deserve after two impressive wins, but the Texans have been unlucky in their last two games not to get a win. This is the Texans season hanging in the balance this week and I think they get it together and pick up their first win.

REDSKINS (-13) over Rams - A couple weeks ago I said "never take the Rams against the spread." Do you really think I'm going to go against that in a game against my Skins in DC?

BRONCOS (-3) over Jaguars - This Jaguar team just lacks that nastiness they had last year and this Broncos team will score against anyone without a sound D. I doubt the Jags offense can keep up unless that dormant running attack can get going.

Eagles (-4.5) over 49ERS - I'm not sure when Vegas is going to realize the niners aren't very good, but I do. The Eagles are in a must win here after two bad losses and I think they respond with a dominating performance on both sides of the ball.

Cowboys (-4.5) over CARDINALS - I'm still not sure this Cardinal defense can stop anyone and that's not a good thing going against the multi-faceted Dallas attack. This one will for sure be high scoring and entertaining, but I think Dallas snaps out of there mini funk for a big win.

Packers (+1.5) over SEAHAWKS - The Packers should be able to get things going against a weak Seahawks team that will likely be without Matt Hasselbeck.

Patriots (+5) over CHARGERS - The Chargers need this game a lot more than the Patriots, so I can't see the Pats winning this one big, but I still don't know what to expect from this Charger team. For that reason, I think the Chargers win this one in a close hard fought game that comes down to a FG.

Giants (-7.5) over BROWNS - I don't really see any way this one is close. The Giants can run and pass the ball on anyone. The Browns can't run or pass on anyone, but the Bengals. This one's a rout from the opening kick.

The Fall Movie Preview: Movie #4

Baz Luhrman, where have you been?

When Australia is released on November 26th it will mark Luhrman's 3rd release in 13 years. After Moulin Rouge won him nominations and acclaim, Baz was rumored to be working on an Alexander the Great biopic but after Oliver Stone's miserable crack at Alex that project may never surface. Maybe he's just waiting a decade for every one to forget about Colin Farrell with blonde hair? Anyways, he's been MIA for quite some time. Part of the reason Luhrman takes so long between his movies is because moreso than most directors, his films are truly a labor of love to him. He directs them, he writes them, his wife makes the costumes. This certainly bodes well for any movie he's a part of.

Anyways… Australiawhat's the big fucking deal? To me, the draw of Australia is simply the unknown. The movie will almost assuredly be a visual masterpiece (over-saturated colors abound). Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman are nothing if not solid. The wild card here is the plot. Luhrman's previous outings didn't exactly break any new ground with story-telling. Moulin Rouge was a cookie-cutter tragic love story and Romeo + Juliet followed the Bard's script almost exactly. Nothing against those movies though, for all their simplicity they did tug at the heartstrings. (Ewan McGregor's rendition of "Your Song" bumped my gay quotient by a few basis points)

Australia takes place in pre-WWII Australia. While most of us consider ourselves amateur historians when it comes to Omaha Beach and Stalingrad, but I don't think many people out there know much about the events of this movie. The love story will take place on the backdrop the early Pacific Campaign and the bombing of Darwin by the Japanese. I'm hoping something might surprise me. It seems like this film will pull a Pearl Harbor and make the love story more important than the historical event but at least they are being up front about it with the marketing. (And there's no real emotional tie to this event like there is with the day that will live in infamy)

I'll be honest, this movie does have pretty high suck potential, but it makes the list because of Luhrman's return to the big screen and it holds the promise of giving us something fresh.

From the awkward story of the day department...

Mind you this is a guy who in his short career has already broken his leg as a rookie, torn up his knee in a motorcycle accident, and undergone the dreaded microfracture surgery. So without further adu, I give to you the ailments of one Kellen Winslow:
A league source tells us that the talk among the Browns is that tight end Kellen Winslow landed in the Cleveland Clinic because his balls swelled to the size of grapefruits.
Talk about bad luck. For once though I feel like the fantasy gods aren't after just me, because I don't own Winslow on one team. Just think if this were the fantasy super bowl and you lost by 5 points because you had to start John Carlson instead of Winslow because of this injury. Personally, I'm not sure I'd ever recover. Thankfully though, it's only week 6 and my team is already pretty much dead in the water anyways.

Skins song for week 6

And here is a link to all Redskin videos on youtube. The site has just about everything a Redskin fan needs to get them ready for Sundays game or to catch highlights from the previous week.

Oh and by the way. I haven't come out with my picks yet, but remember two weeks ago when I said never take the Rams against the spread. Well, Skins -13.5 this week coming home? Give me a break. I'm tempted to say tease that up to 19.5 and take the Skins, but I don't want to jinx them, so just give the 13.5 and bet it big.

It was only a matter of time

When I turned on Sportscenter this morning I heard the pleasant news that Pacman was in trouble again. Yes that same Pacman that said he had cleaned up his act and who was provided with a full time security team to keep him out of trouble had still found a way to stir things up.

The story goes like this:

Pacman was at a hotel for the premier of a Ludacris movie (Max Payne? You really needed to risk your NFL career at the premier for Max Payne?) and was getting his goose on. Pacman then proceeded to leave the premier without paying his tab. Pacman then allegedly damaged hotel property and got into an "altercation" with his bodyguard. Police were called, but no charges were made.

Really? Who gets in a fight with their bodyguard? We've been hearing in recent weeks that Pacman has been getting a little antsy with all of the precautions the Cowboys were taking with him and now an incident seems inevitable. The underlying story here though seems to be the impending implosion of the Dallas Cowboys. TO is whining again about not getting enough touches (after getting 20 plays run for him during the Skins game), Pacman is going nuts, the defense can't create turnovers, and it appears the teams no.1 corner, Terence Newman (no, contrary to popular belief, Pacman is not even a starter on this team) could be out 6 weeks with a sports hernia. As a Redskin fan you have to love it.

Everyone's favorite SC anchor loves to holler

This audio clip is from a while ago, but I just saw a recent article referring to it and I remembered how funny it was. A lot of blogs like to blast Scott Van Pelt over this, but I think it's hilarious. Especially the fact that at the time, SVP was in Dewey Beach, which from what I can remember, isn't the classiest of vacation spots.

The Fall Movie Preview: Movie #5

We're bringing back the famed TFWF movie reviewer, Johnny Bosco, after a three month hiatus. Following on the footsteps of his Dark Knight preview, he now brings to you his fall movie preview:

In case you haven't noticed, the flow of quality films has slowed to a trickle since the middle of August. Fear not, moviegoers, the fall movie season is fast approaching to save you from the doldrums of cable television and your Netflix queue.

The fall and winter happen to be my favorite time for movies (and should be yours too). While the summer is awash with special effects, multi-million dollar marketing budgets, and paper-thin stories, the fall is when the folks with ACTUAL talent go to work (the fact that Michael Bay has never released a film during the fall season proves this theory). Sometimes they're gunning for an Oscar, sometimes they just don't want to get lost in the chaotic mess of summer. Either way, during the fall you're more likely to see a movie that you actually think about after leaving the theater.

This fall is shaping up to be especially good. So I'm giving a rundown of the top 5 most intriguing releases of the Fall 08 movie season. These movies probably won't be the best 5 of the season. In fact, more than one may end up being fantastic flops. These are 5 movies that have the most intriguing story behind them. Maybe somebody's career is on the line, maybe somebody is making a comeback. Either way, these movies will inspire curiosity. We'll present these movies in reverse order, so without further adu, here is my pick for no.5:

#5 Quantum of Solace

There really isn't that much "intriguing" about this film. I'm just really psyched about it so it lands in the number 5 spot.

In 2006 Bond was re-born. While his previous outing, Die Another Day, loosely resembled a story I wrote at the age of 9 after eating too much FunDip, Casino Royale (and star Daniel Craig) breathed new life into the franchise with plausible and edgy film. Simply put, it was one of the best action movies in the past 5 years.

This November Quantum of Solace picks up right where Casino Royale left off (a first for Bond films). The plot won't break any new ground, but it does promise to delve deeper into the psyche of Bond and close the story arc begun in the previous movie. And of course the action promises to be some of the best film has to offer. The action was so intense during the filming of this movie that several Aston Martins and stuntmen were severely damaged and injured.

Only complaint about the Bond franchise: Why does he always use his real name? Don't you think the bad guys would have a blog they all read (TheWorldIsMine.com maybe?) where they could give each other a heads up about Bond? Something like, "If you meet a suave Brit by the name of James Bond, you're about to get your evil plans destroyed, your ass kicked and your girlfriend stolen. Do no engage in high-stakes card games, battles of wit, and/or any sort of vehicular chase. Bust a cap in him before he kicks the everloving shit out of you." Yes, it's nitpicky, but I can't help but think that every time the bad guy meets Bond at a cocktail party and gives him nothing more than a suspicious look.

Week 5 TFWF Power Rankings

It was a week with few major upsets and a clearer top tear. The NFC East is still the cream of the crop, but the NFC South and AFC East both look like solid divisions as well. So here are the rankings:

32) St. Louis Rams - A week off and a new coach hasn't made me forget how bad these guys are. My Skins get these guys at home and I expect my boys to give them the beatdown.

31) Detroit Lions - The renewed excitement generated by the start of the post-Matt Millen era was quickly crushed this week. The most troubling thing about the Lions being this bad is that it appears they are on their way to ruining the talents of a truly special player in Calvin Johnson.

30) Kansas City Chiefs - I was right when I said that win over Denver was a fluke. This team cannot stop the run and has only been competitive against the one team they've played that can't run the ball: Denver. I guess drafting defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey no.5 overall this year isn't paying off just yet.

29) Cincinnati Bengals -This team has been slightly more competitive the last two weeks to no avail. This team is banged up offensively and terrible defensively. The countdown to Marvin Lewis getting fired is on and I see it ending after week 9 going into the Bengals bye week.

28) Cleveland Browns - Fantasy owners of Kellen Winslow and Braylon Edwards have to be hoping for some Brady Quinn sitings sooner than later at this point.

27) Oakland Raiders - Who lives longer, Al Davis or John McCain? And which do you think more Raider fans are worried about?

26) Houston Texans - Really Sage? You thought the John Elway helicopter dive was the way to go with 3 minutes left leading by 17?

25) Seattle Seahawks - So they finally get their two starting receivers back last week and what happens: a 44-6 demolition by the Giants. Oh and one of those WRs, Deion Branch, got hurt again too.

24) San Francisco 49ers - Patrick Willis had 18 tackles in that game Sunday. Imagine how many points the 49ers give up with him.

23) Jacksonville Jaguars - This team still cannot run the ball and that defense just doesn't seem to have that nastiness they had last year.

22) Indianapolis Colts - This team could easily be 0-4. But that is why Peyton Manning is a hall of famer.

21) Minnesota Vikings - I'm still not sure how they won that game Monday night, but it didn't really impress me. Peterson not being able to run against that Saints D was the most distressing part about that Monday night game.

20) Green Bay Packers - Packers fans probably are wishing they had that Brett Favre guy still, but that is hardly the problem here. This team cannot run the ball and that defense has given up 25 points or more in four straight games.

19) Atlanta Falcons - Falcons fans, say it with me, "Michael Vick, who?" I don't love this team yet, but I definitely think the Falcons have something special in Matt Ryan.

18) New Orleans Saints - That game Monday night is a blowout if not for Reggie Bush and his punt return skills. That kind of performance at home against an average Vikings team and that's a scary sign for this Saint team.

17) Miami Dolphins - This ranking shows the true parity in the middle tier of this league. This Dolphin team has dominated the Patriots and Chargers in consecutive weeks and still sits at 17. I'm still not sure this Wildcat offense can continue to baffle defensive coordinators.

16) Arizona Cardinals - So all the Cards needed was a little home cooking to recover from that tough East Coast road trip. This offense can score on anyone, the question is, can they hold enough teams under 30 points to make the playoffs in that awful NFC West.

15) NY Jets - A bye week later and I still don't understand why the Jets go for it on 4th and 5 up 13 with 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter and then following it up by going for the two point conversion.

14) San Diego Chargers - Who is this team, the one that got beaten by the Dolphins and trailed the Raiders 15-0 at halftime or the one that blew away the Raiders in the second half. I'm still not sure, but this doesn't look like a playoff team to me.

13) Baltimore - That defense is as good as ever, but Ray Lewis and Ed Reed still can't make up for an impotent offense.

12) Buffalo Bills - This ranking completely reflects the uncertainty surrounding Trent Edwards. If he can make it back quickly, which I doubt given the ferocity of that hit, this team probably sits around no.10. Without him, this team is looking at the cellar of the AFC East.

11) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - You'd think they'd be able to score more than 13 points against that Broncos D, but on the flip side, you'd think the Broncos would score more than 16. If they can get that QB situation settled this team will be in the hunt for a wild card come playoff time.

10) Denver Broncos - Still can't run or stop the run, but that AFC West is pretty weak and Jay Cutler looks like an MVP candidate.

9) Philadelphia Eagles - Two tough losses in a row and a banged up Brian Westbrook has the Eagles three games back in the NFC East and 2 back of third place Dallas.

8) Chicago Bears - I'm starting to buy into the Kyle Orton - Matt Forte combo after some impressive wins and a couple real close losses. This young tandem should only get better as the season goes along.

7) New England Patriots - Matt Cassell and Randy Moss finally got on the same page Sunday and that defense started forcing some turnovers. The next two weeks against the Chargers and Broncos should be a nice test for this team.

6) Carolina Panthers - This is a well-built team on both sides of the ball. These guys just seem like the team that finishes the year with 11 or 12 wins, but no one thinks has a chance of making the Super Bowl.

5) Pittsburgh Steelers - A couple impressive wins for a banged up Steeler squad and this team now has the bye week to nurse its wounds.

4) Dallas Cowboys - A home loss to the Cowboys, an unimpressive performance against the woeful Bengals, and an impending TO blowup means this team has to drop to third in the brutal NFC East.

3) Washington Redskins - Hip hip hooray! Another impressive road win and that first half in New York sure seems like a long time ago.

2) Tennessee - This team feels like the Baltimore Ravens team from 2001. A dominating defense, a battle tested QB, and a steady running game. Unfortunately, I'd be surprised any representative out of the NFC in the Super Bowl will be as weak as that Giant team the Ravens beat up on in Super Bowl XXXV.

1) NY Giants - What can this team not do at this point? They are the most complete team in football and unless a team can pound the football on them, I don't see any way a team gets rolling offensively against that pass rush. If Eli Manning can continue to avoid the mistakes that have plagued him at times in his career, this team looks to be a step above the rest of the league.
